Welcome to Texas Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics a San Antonio-based general and bariatric surgery practice.

Joel A. Rodriguez, M.D., F.A.C.S. established Texas Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics for the advanced surgical treatment of overweight and obesity. Dr. Rodriguez specializes in weight loss surgery, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, gastric band, and revision surgeries (revision of previous bariatric procedures).

Joel A. Rodriguez, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Founder and President
Joel A. Rodriguez, M.D., F.A.C.S. has completed more than 1,200 bariatric operations and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). After graduating from Princeton University and Baylor College of Medicine, he completed general surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine followed by fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center, with a focus on laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive techniques. As a designated Intuitive Surgical Proctor, he is certified to teach other surgeons in robotic techniques for bariatric and general surgery.

David J. Straus IV, M.D.

David J. Straus IV, M.D. is a general surgeon and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He received specialized training in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of California – San Diego in La Jolla. He has recently published in the areas of Robotic Foregut Surgery, Revisional Bariatric Surgery, and Robotic Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.

Biography
Joel A. Rodriguez, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a general surgeon and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He received specialized fellowship training in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He has performed over 1,200 bariatric operations and has extensive experience in complex bariatric operations such as the duodenal switch procedure and all revisional operations. Dr. Rodriguez earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. He then completed medical school and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he trained with world-renowned faculty members in the Michael E. Debakey Department of Surgery. His research in the fields of genomics, general surgery, and bariatric surgery has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, and his work has earned him plenary seminar presentations at national conferences for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Rodriguez is also a board member with the American Diabetes Association of San Antonio.

David J. Straus IV, M.D.

General & Bariatric Surgery

Biography
David J. Straus IV, M.D. is a general surgeon and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He received specialized training in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of California – San Diego in La Jolla, California. He has recently published in the areas of Robotic Foregut Surgery, Revisional Bariatric Surgery, and Robotic Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.

Dr. Straus is a sixth-generation Texan graduating from Alamo Heights High School. He then graduated from Washington and Lee University with a degree in Neuroscience. After, he returned to San Antonio to obtain his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Straus then travelled to Miami to undergo a rigorous general surgery residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital (University of Miami) with broad exposure to Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. He rounded out his formal training with a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of California at San Diego.
