Biography

Joel A. Rodriguez, M.D. is a highly skilled general surgeon, board certified by the American Board of Surgery, and currently serves as the Chief of Robotic Surgery at Texas Advanced Surgical and Bariatrics. Dr. Rodriguez has extensive expertise in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, having completed specialized fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Over the course of his career, he has successfully performed more than 1500 robotic procedures, including the full scope of bariatric surgery.

Dr. Rodriguez’s academic journey began at Princeton University, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He went on to complete both medical school and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, training under world-renowned surgeons in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery. His dedication to advancing the field of surgery is evident in his research, which has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences, including those held by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Rodriguez is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the Bexar County Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He also serves on the board of the American Diabetes Association of San Antonio, reflecting his commitment to improving patient care in his community.
